Training for Consistency in Movement |
Training for consistency is not just simply training to make a similar save without failure, but for a goalkeeper it is more important to train to be consistent in the WAY we move. A goalkeeper must move in a way that is similar from one type of save to another. What I mean by that is that there are not 10 different ways to move the body for 10 different types of shots. There is one most efficient way for 10 different types of shots. Each goalkeeper will have some variance in their individual movement based on their level of athleticism and balance.
The key is that the initial movement must be the same from one type of save to another so there is no "lag" time in deciding how to move. Many coaches discuss the "power dive". This power dive idea simply does not work. (This is discussed further in another blog) The bigger problem, though, is the fact that this movement is different than the simple movement across the goal in behind a ball. When a goalkeeper is able to move their feet and stay on their feet in a save, the shoulders stay forward in their movement as their feet moves across to the side. Changing to this power dive is a different type of movement all together. When the ball is shot, the goalkeeper must decide how to move, often causing him or her to just throw themselves at the ball. Proper goalkeeper training eliminates this choice so that goalkeepers become consistent in the way they move!
Once consistency in movement is established, then and only then will consistency in result be accomplished.
